The Smuggler's Sunken Cargo

Expected Value 680 gp

The captain's box is caught above the waterline. Four sealed crates sit below it in the flooded hold, their ropes still fastened to a loading beam. A manifest names a spice merchant in the nearest port who buys this cargo. The box holds the coins, pearls, and any bonus items. Each crate adds 75 gp once recovered; the box alone holds 200 gp in coins and pearls. Reveal the box before the party tackles the cargo. Leave crates unclaimed until recovered, or put them on a beach if your group skips hauling logistics.

Suggested reward for four characters, levels 4-6. Levels describe the reward, not encounter difficulty. Guaranteed coins and valuables: 500 gp; equipment and magic are extra. Homebrew quantities, drop chances, and trade valuations. Each chance is independent; multiple bonus items or none can appear. Copy this template to adjust it before deploying.
